Solar leads new power projects in Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) says it has observed an increasing trend among companies installing solar systems for their consumption, as well as for net metering.

Out of the licensed power generation projects last year, ZERA said 16 projects are solar photovoltaic power plants, while one is a coal-fired thermal power plant.

“A majority of applications considered by ZERA were for solar systems installed by companies for own consumption, with a significant number coming from captive power producers. ZERA continues to facilitate the growth of this new category of power producers, in order to bring stability to the electricity sub-sector,” ZERA said in its annual report.

As a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels, solar energy is a cornerstone of climate action, fundamentally reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Its scalable nature enhances energy security, fosters sustainable development, and offers an increasingly cost-effective path to a low-carbon future.

Meanwhile, ZERA said electricity supply remained subdued during the year with an average capacity of 1,300MW against a demand of 1,700MW, mainly due to reduced water levels in the Kariba Dam.

It said three regulations were amended and submitted for promulgation in the coming year.

“The solar products and installation regulations’ amendments are meant to curb the rise of substandard solar products on the market and poor workmanship from unqualified personnel,” ZERA said.
