The City of Victoria Falls has launched its inaugural Sustainability Monograph, a landmark document designed to preserve its international wetland status and make the city a green and sustainable destination.
Launched this Tuesday in the resort city, the monograph outlines strategies to attract green investment, unlock climate finance, create green jobs, and foster a circular economy, all while conserving biodiversity and enhancing Victoria Falls’ status as an eco-friendly tourism destination.
Speaking at the launch, chief director in the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Washington Zhakata, said the initiative aligns with Zimbabwe’s Paris Agreement commitments and national goal to cut per capita emissions by 40% by 2030.
“This forward-thinking initiative aligns seamlessly with Zimbabwe’s broader Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement and our pursuit of a net-zero future,” he said.
“Through wastewater reuse, wetland conservation, renewable energy investments, and sustainable tourism practices, Victoria Falls is not only creating local benefits but also positioning itself to generate carbon credits and tap into climate finance mechanisms for greater impact.”
Victoria Falls, already globally recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was recently accredited as a Ramsar Wetland City.
Victoria Falls Town Clerk Ronnie Dube highlighted the local benefits, including improved service delivery, lower operational costs, investment attraction, and job creation through a greener economy.
“Transitioning to a Green City involves implementing practical strategies that enhance the urban environment while promoting social equity and economic viability,” Dube said.
“The city aims to improve public transport systems, encourage the use of renewable energy and enhance green spaces. These initiatives will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also foster a healthier, more vibrant community.”
He added that by prioritising sustainability, Victoria Falls can attract investment and carbon financing, conserve natural resources, and enhance tourism, thereby creating new job opportunities for residents.
“A greener city enhances quality of life, increases citizen satisfaction, and enables more effective service delivery through reduced operational costs,” Dube said.
Environmental consultant Anglistone Sibanda added that branding Victoria Falls as a carbon-neutral destination will attract environmentally conscious travellers and boost sustainable tourism.
The Sustainability Monograph outlines the city’s ambitions in climate leadership, smart urban planning, environmental innovation and a broader green transition.
The document represents a strategic and practical roadmap for the City’s transition into a green, smart and sustainable urban centre, in line with SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities.
