The City of Harare has announced plans to construct a 50-megawatt solar energy project, set to reduce its carbon footprint and ensure environmental sustainability.
The initiative is a key component of the city’s 2025 financial year plan and aims to address pressing energy challenges while promoting sustainable development.
The solar farm, to be constructed on council-owned land in Crowborough, will require a total investment of US$50 million.
A significant initial investment of US$5 million has been proposed for the 2025 financial year. Once operational, the plant will generate clean electricity to power the city’s critical water and sewer treatment plants. Any surplus energy will be fed into the national grid under net metering arrangements.
The project is set to reduce operational costs significantly and also reduce the City of Harare’s dependence on the national grid.
“The project promises significant cost savings, enhanced energy security, environmental benefits, and economic growth. It positions Harare as a leader in renewable energy in Africa, setting a benchmark for other cities to follow. By investing in solar energy, Harare is lighting the path to a brighter, greener future,” the city’s finance and development committee chairperson Costa Mande said.
