Zimbabwe accelerates rural solar power rollout, targeting 200,000 homes

Zimbabwe’s Presidential Solarisation Programme is gaining momentum, marking a significant step towards expanding access to clean energy in rural communities.

Following the approval of the Implementation Plan in December 2024, the government has made substantial progress in laying the groundwork for the project, which aims to provide solar power to 200,000 households.

“Guidelines for the implementation of the programme have been established with stakeholder mapping and identification of beneficiaries in villages across the eight rural provinces already completed,’ Minister of Information Jenfan Muswere said at a post-Cabinet briefing.

He added that community mobilisation and awareness processes spearheaded by the Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution have also been completed.

The initiative will leverage the skills of Youth Service in Zimbabwe graduates, who, with expert assistance from the Harare Institute of Technology and the Rural Electrification Agency, will be responsible for the installation of the 200,000 solar kits.

Muswere said the official launch of the Presidential Solarisation Programme, presided over by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, will mark the commencement of the first year of the transformative project.
